This is a pastry with a long history originating in Rome, and though the classic form is quite basic, there are plenty of variations. This one had a light espresso flavor infusing the creme with a chocolate filling to accompany the generous portion. Despite its name, the Veneziana has its roots in the Lombardy region, not Venice, and is a popular Milanese pastry. It’s a soft, buttery brioche filled with crema pasticcera, which is an Italian vanilla custard, topped with Italian Pearl Sugar Grains. It shares the same filling as the Venetian Creme, and while it’s soft and flaky with extraordinary crema pasticcera, I can’t recommend this over the Venetian Creme. Much of the allure of this pastry is aesthetic, which is actually a very modern expression in the pastry world–and one that can be passed over if you can set your curiosity aside and look for the pure expressions of excellence. This hefty slice is deceptively laden, layer over layer with delicious, rich dark chocolate. I truly think there might be more chocolate than bread in this decadent yet simple treat. The ingredients are simple— just light sauce, tomato, mozzarella di bufala and basil. All fresh and all delicious. The simple combination of basil and mozzarella is always a winner and it perfectly decorates fresh focaccia bread with fresh tomatoes. The lady fingers are perfectly soaked with espresso–not too dry or swimming. Everything about this take on Tiramisu screams “iconic”, like the blueprint from which all other Tiramisus are made. Its Tiramisu is basic, uncomplicated, and almost cafeteria-esque with the way it’s served with efficiency in mind. The plain round dessert bowls aren’t out to impress anyone, but they’re still filled with tiramisu and it’s still delicious. On a side note, I love this place! This take on tiramisu is the exact opposite as Fortunata. It’s as if the chef said “I’m going to break every rule and still make it amazing!” The textures were inconsistent with the cream having some clumps here and there and the liquor was very rich and forward. This Tiramisu turns it up to 11 and I am all about it! This one has the most divergent presentation of the four we tried, in style and flavor. It is flavor-forward with rich coffee that not only soaks the lady fingers, but is also whipped into the smooth, light cream. With less focus on contrast and perfect layers, this whimsical tiramisu is served in a ramekin dish, which is perfect if you're dining fireside in their grotto. designs, so I threw my hat into the ring. there were a couple clues given, but it was mostly a wide-open opportunity to be creative. one hint was a common phrase used among cyclists - “pedal on”. after observing the style of the workers and general culture of those that ride as a lifestyle, seeing the color palette and other representations of the brand; I wanted to create something that was unique and non-obvious. it’s really easy to use the usual symbols synonymous with cycling like wheels, gears and chains, but that didn’t seem to be what they were looking for. looking through the pictures on Bike Clark County’s Facebook page. I gathered several pictures of WA license plates on the internet to find an example of each letter, the dash and number 5 for reference. first, I traced the outline of the plate, then I traced the silhouette of the mountains and it started looking pretty good. so I progressed to the letters, got the basic shapes down and began to experiment with different shading. the screws at the top are basically drawn using a photo of my own license plate for reference. The ‘Washington’ and ‘cannabis’ lettering that is used on license plates. I was fortunate enough to find the font, so I just typed it in - same thing for the letters and numbers on the registration tabs. So I began with a perfect 3-dimensional box and Michael was not digging it. it wasn’t unique. he said to crunch the box and make it look like it had been squeezed a bit, like someone had actually clutched it in their hand. heeding his instruction, I bent the back edge slightly and exaggerated both edges of the front panel to create the effect he was looking for. after we achieved the right shape for the box, we found the right straw to pair with it and ended up with something that we both loved! https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61eedd0e0e1196494391e1c7/75925687-1538-4083-bd60-bd1ceb798666/TJB_Font.png Portfolio - The Juice Box - THE FONT: as mentioned previously, I used the ‘96 NBA All-Star Game jerseys as a reference and looked for a font that was comparable. after peering through a dozen or so sporty fonts, I settled on one that felt sporty, but was also purposely imperfect which nodded to the Nickelodeon inspiration. after settling on a font, color palette and a solid icon, we could move forward with creating other representations of the business for particular purposes. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61eedd0e0e1196494391e1c7/2eeb7d71-cba9-423f-b346-0ca4ea189859/Jackalope.png Portfolio - The Juice Box we caught wind that Michael’s business partner, Levi, had a thing for jackalopes. Michael thought it would be cool to have a design that featured a jackalope having a beer. I thought it would be funny to have that jackalope drinking out of the same glass as the person enjoying the beverage. so I made a vector out of a picture of the glassware, then took that whole design, shrunk it down and put it on the glass that the original jackalope was drinking out of to create what we referred to as “jackalope inception”. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61eedd0e0e1196494391e1c7/7e410a6b-ff65-41d8-a51d-08e225b015ab/Jream_CROP.png Portfolio - The Juice Box you may or may not be familiar with a popular 90’s rap group known as Wu-Tang Clan: they had a song called C.R.E.A.M. which was an acronym from Cash Rules Everything Around Me. for some reason, a popular design parody emerged that played on the Drug Abuse Resistance Education branding from the 90’s (also known as D.A.R.E.) exchanging the letters with C.R.E.A.M.. Michael came up with his own clever parody - J.R.E.A.M., which stands for, Juice Rules Everything Around Me.
